An exciting new high-velocity game show is coming to Fox on Tuesday, February 26th. It features an obstacle course, giant spinning capsule, and a perennially young Rob Lowe. Are you ready for the excitement?

According to Fox Television, Mental Samurai “… pushes every aspect of human intelligence and mental agility.” They describe it as an obstacle course for the mind. At least it won’t be quite as challenging as the most dangerous game shows in the world. We hope!

Acing the ‘Mental Samurai’ course

Contestants need to demonstrate their mental agility by answering questions quickly and accurately. The hitch? They have to do it while zooming around the obstacle course in a capsule that can also rotate 360°! Can you say “head rush”?

Demonstrating their mastery of general knowledge, numbers and sequencing, and memory under those conditions will definitely show off their ability to focus. And their stamina under such stomach-churning conditions!

Tag teaming it

Warner Horizon Unscripted & Alternative Television has teamed up with A. Smith & Co. Productions to produce Mental Samurai. Both companies are experienced competition show producers, with Ellen’s Game of Games, The Voice, Hell’s Kitchen, American Ninja Warrior, and The Titan Games under their belts. With that much experience in epic physical challenges, can we expect an equally challenging mental competition? It sounds like it!

Other recent Fox game/competition shows

The Masked Singer premiered on Fox in January and the celebrity singing competition has quickly proven to be a hit. Other new game shows have appeared in the Fox wheelhouse recently. They include 25 Words or Less(given a trial run last summer) and Spin the Wheel.

They join popular Fox game/competition shows like Beat Shazam, the Masterchef franchise, and Hell’s Kitchen. Hopefully, Fox will continue its winning streak and not add to its list of ‘ten worst shows‘!

Celebrities seem to love game shows

A whole host of celebrities have taken up the game show mantle recently. Besides Lowe, stars such as Alec Baldwin (Match Game), Ellen DeGeneres (Ellen’s Game of Games), Jamie Foxx (Beat Shazam), and Jane Lynch (Hollywood Game Night) have hosted their own game shows. Maybe they’re trying to enter the world of highly paid game show hosts like Alex Trebek, Pat Sajak, Steve Harvey, and the legendary Bob Barker.

Even more celebrities have appeared as contestants on game shows. According to Lowe, he “won big” on The $10,000 Pyramid when he was just 15. He credits that win with fueling his love for mental competitions.

What else has Lowe been up to lately?

This former Brat Packer went on to star as Chris Traeger in the iconic sitcom Parks and Recreation. He also starred in Code Black (2016 -2018) and provided the voice of Simba in the children’s animated series The Lion Guard during the same time period. In 2017, he played the alien Darulio in two episodes of The Orville. He’ll be juggling his Mental Samurai duties with his starring role in the new British crime miniseries Wild Bill.

His most recent movie credits include How to Be a Latin Lover (2017), Super Troopers 2 (2018), The Bad Seed (2018 TV movie), and Christmas in the Wild (now filming). With three projects in the works, it sounds like he’ll be particularly busy this year!

WCG Ultimate Gamer was a reality television program that aired on Syfy, sponsored by Samsung and the World Cyber Games (WCG). The show was hosted by Hannah Simone and co-hosted by Joel Gourdin. The first season began airing on March 10, 2009.^[1] The second season was confirmed at CES on January 7, 2010,^[2] and began airing on August 19, 2010 finishing on October 7, 2010.

Format[edit]

WCG Ultimate Gamer has 12 gamers living in one loft. Each episode they would compete in a Real Life Challenge and in an Isolation Challenge. The Real Life Challenge complemented and provided a clue to the actual Xbox 360 game they were to play later in the Isolation challenge. For example, the players played paintball before playing Halo 3, had a dunk contest before playing NBA Live 09, and drifted cars before playing Project Gotham Racing 4. The gamer with the highest score from both challenges had the choice to pick one other gamer to play against the gamer with the lowest score in an Elimination Challenge where the loser goes home. The competitor with the highest score could also pick themselves to play the lowest scoring gamer, but this rule was discontinued in season 2. Sometimes the two gamers in the Elimination Challenge have to pick someone to partner with them in the challenge, but their partner is not at risk of elimination.
